Book Spotlight & Author Interview: Thoughtless by Jacqueline Gardner (And A Giveaway!)

So with us today is Jaqueline Gardner, author of THOUGHTLESS and the M.E.R. Series (Book 1: MUTINY). Here is a bit about her:

Jaqueline Gardner works as a Story Editor for the production company, Labragirl Pictures. Her love of storytelling began at an early age when she would make up stories with her grandmother before bedtime. In early 2012, she completed her first novel and has been stuck on writing ever since. She resides in Colorado and loves hiking, fantasy, fiction, and all things cupcake.
And, of course, here is a bit about her book, THOUGHTLESS:

When Bridget finds a dead cheerleader in the janitor's closet, she becomes the killer's next target. High school just got worse. It's bad enough that she can hear the shocking truths that pass through her classmates' heads. Now she has to worry about staying alive, and all clues point to the one person whose thoughts she can't read - her boyfriend Terrence. Someone is taunting her, threatening to expose her secret, and when Bridget tries to single out her blackmailer, she's nearly beaten to death by a mind-controlled minion with fiery eyes. But when Bridget finally comes face-to-face with the killer, suddenly a horde of brainwashed students programmed to destroy her life doesn't see so bad.

THOUGHTLESS sounds pretty intriguing to me! To find out more about the book and Jacqueline, I had the opportunity to interview her:

Q: How long have you been writing?
A: I've been writing stories since elementary school, but nothing book length until two years ago.

Q: How did you start writing?
A: I started keeping an idea journal because I didn't want to forget anything.
I keep lots of journals! I always hate when I have an idea and I don't have something to write it down on. I just got a Micky Mouse journal :)

Q: Do you have any pre-writing rituals?

A: Nothing specific. Though I do have to make sure I have some kind of background noise to listen to.  I can’t write in absolute silence.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration from?
A: Lots of my ideas start with “what if” questions.  From there I try and create a plot.  Sometimes an awesome story is born.  Sometimes my ideas suck.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your book?
A: THOUGHTLESS is a YA supernatural thriller about a mind-reader named Bridget.  During a high school football game, Bridget accidentally stumbles upon a dead body in the janitor’s closet.  There’s a killer out there.  And worse, the killer knows Bridget’s secret.  The one time she actually tries to embrace her talent, it’s useless.  Bridget can’t figure out who’s blackmailing her, who killed Stacy, and why she can’t hear her boyfriend’s thoughts!

Q: Did you enjoy writing THOUGHTLESS?
A: Oh definitely!  I got so into the story that I wrote the first draft pretty fast.  You know the things people don’t say, but you know they’re thinking it?  I got to write all that stuff down.

Q: How would you describe your main character?
A: Bridget has a lot on her plate.  She’s a teenager trying to find balance, and the whole mind-reading thing is overwhelming at times.  But as the book progresses, Bridget starts to really see what’s important and she learns how to fight for it.  Bridget gets to have all those awesome moments I wish I would've had (punching a certain guy in the face).

Q: What's it like knowing people actually read your books?
A: It’s a bit nerve-wrecking because you can’t expect every single person out there to love your work.  But of course, I do hope most people enjoy it.  And for those that do like the first book in the THOUGHTLESS series, book two will be a fun summer read.

Q: Do you plan to keep writing?
A: Yes I do!  I’ve started three different series and I plan on finishing them.

Q: Do you have any words of wisdom for aspiring writers?
A: I learn new things every day, but some good advice I’ve held on to is edit with an open mind.  Don’t freak out when someone sends you a critique covered in red marks.  Whether or not you agree with the comments made, see those moments as a challenge to do better.

Thanks for the awesome interview! Now for two more awesome things:

In exchange, Eric must follow his Chief Commander's every order and never ask questions, no matter the assignment.
